Welcome To My ........

The Spacious Mind
Gentle Path Highway
2007 Countryman Records
Sweden (55 Mins)
Wow ! Here is another GREAT epic adventure into spaceland kids !!! Sweden's Space gods "The Spacious Minds" have done it yet again...... Right from the opening track "Rider Of The Woodlands" you are transported into the creative space void of these 4 musical astronauts. Like all their music each song is given lots of space to unfold and develop and each time you listen to the music you will hear something new. To some I suspect the repetition of this music will lose their interest, but trust me deeper examination is required to really get the full effect of what they are doing. IMHO another amazing album and one that I would highly recommend to all fans of deep Space rock !

Hüsker Dü
Zen Arcade
1984 SST Records
U.S.A. (77 Mins)
Brace yourselves kids !! Zen Arcade is anything but an Arcade ! This concept album caught all the punk'sters off guard and is an album adored as much by the prog'sters, psych'sters and punk'sters. It is an album about an adolescent who runs away because his home life is unfulfilling, only to find the world outside is even worse. The album incorporates elements of jazz, psychedelia, acoustic folk, pop, and piano interludes, concepts previously unheard of in the world of hardcore punk. Zen Arcade is frequently cited on all-time best of's lists. While not commercially successful, the influence of Zen Arcade has stretched beyond the underground music sphere and has become a cult followed album.

Byrds
Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
1968 Columbia Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
in 1968 something happened to add another page in the book of music......The Byrds fused Country into Rock to create a sound that today is still being aped ! With so much turmoil in the band (exit of David Crosby in 1967) the Byrds were clearly in search of a new identity...and that they found however short (and sweet) it was with fellow musician Gram Parsons. The end result is the original mix of rock, Byrds-psychey twinge and the twang of country all mixed together. This is one of my personal favourite albums of the 60's and helped me form a real respect for Gram Parsons as well. Although not inteneded to be overly psychy when recorded, this album remains a real experiment and upon deep listening will reveal its psychy edges.

Donovan
A Gift From A Flower
To A Garden
1967 Epic Records
U.K. (40 Mins)
Rock music's first two-LP box set ! ..and an essential one at that ! "A Gift from a Flower to a Garden" was Donovan's 3rd UK album and represents one of the tasty milestones of the flower-power era. Donovan went back to a very soft acoustic vibe on this album and revealed some of the great stories of the 60's in process creating a real spacy acoustic atmosphere.

Fuzztones
Horny As Hell
2008 No Fun Records
U.S.A (65 Mins)
I first heard the Fuzztones about a year ago and ran out to snag this fine collection of their music on CD. If you dig the soundtrack music to 60's Batman then this album is your thing ! The Fuzztones are a creative fuzzed out band who totally dig the 60's psych garage scene and play songs in ode totally to this era. The music is loud and catchy as hell and is a really fun album to spin .

El Diablo
The Devil
2000 Smogless Records
Mexico (55 Mins)
Now how did this album not get onto everyone's best of lists back in 2000 I will never know ! "The Devil" is an album that I have not stopped spinning since I got it. Huge grooves, spacey aura's, sitars, guitars, flute, wild percussion and ooodles and ooodles of spacey mayhem. Imagine a mix of Spacious Mind with the Ozric Tentacles and a bit Pink Floyd tossed in. The track "A Mind Bender" is a classic epic sized ditty with its "Echoes" groove. you can reach the band at "http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.stonerrock.com.mx%2Feldiablo.html&lp=es_en&.intl=us&fr=yfp-t-701"

Of Montreal
The Sunlandic Twins
2005 Polyvinyl Records
U.S.A.(80 Mins)
Of Montreal are an acquired taste i suppose but this album just blew me away and represents one of the best albums of 2005! The Sunlandic Twins was the seventh Of Montreal album and is the perfect mix of Sunshine Psych and Pop for this music lover. As per most of the Of Montreal albums, Kevin Barnes continues in his style of toying and teasing our memories of '60s pop and psych. My CD came as a double CD set with a bonus 4 tracks from the Sunlandic Twins recording session. This music is bizarre and brilliant at the same time.....

The Free Design
Sing For Very Important People
1971 Project 3 Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
Any album that plays an ode to "Can You Tell Me How To Get To Sesame Street" has my full attention ! Talk about a brilliant album...wow this little gem is simply amazing from start to finish. Basically 11 tracks with a huge child -like overlay (my kids love this album) while maintaining a huge "adult" flower-psych vibe. The Free Design blend rich harmonies and melodies with that certain psych 60's / 70's flare that we all love. The folks at Light In The Attic Records have done a masterful remastering on this bright and paisley patterened masterpiece. The album was recorded by Enoch Light so the sound quality is to die for.

Tommy Roe
Phantasy
1967 Fallout Records
U.S.A. (27 Mins)
Tommy Roe will be mostly remembered for his "Bubblegum" hits like "Dizzy" and "Sweet Pea", but it was this delicate little lost gem of psychedelia genius that deserves as much attention. Lost somewhere in the Beach Boys summer daze and Sagittarius' light popsyke icing this album just fits snug and represents for this music lover one fo the best popsyke albums to have been recorded in the late 60's. The whole album clocks in at 27 mins which ends far too soon but every minute of the twenty seven is golden !

Beacon Street Union
The Eyes Of The Beacon St Union
1968 See For Miles Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
I first heard the BSU on a psych compilation and had to hunt this gem down. The Eyes of the Beacon Street Union was at the time a highly experimental album that defied and pushed the musical boundaries in 1968 ! Essentailly The Beacon St. Union were a garage psych-rock band who broke thru with this polished album but never received the notoriety that the San Fran bands did at the time! The band was John Wright (vocals), Paul Tartachny (guitar, vocals), Robert Rhodes (keyboards), Wayne Ulaky (bass, vocals), and Richard Weisburg (drums). What makes this album so magical for me is the creative approach they took on recording this album...mixing blues, psych, pop and even some loosly Eastern-tinged bits.

The Rainbow Band
1971 Electra Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
Now here is a bit of a strange little album that I accidently and luckily stumbled into. I picked up the album at a record show and have played the hell out of this one...there is just something about this album that i love. I guess you would categorize this album in the commune-psychfest category as it is filled with lots of meditative aspects and a real community sense about it. This album was origianlly released on Electra Records, but has also been remastered on CD by Wounded Bird Records.

The Free Design
One By One
1971 Project 3 Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
One By One was sadly the last album recorded for the Project 3 label. This album is equal to the magic of their earlier albums with floating breezy melodies and some of the nicest vocal harmonies you will ever hear. I guess you could say "who didn't do a verison of Light My Fire" but i love their version here with the jazz-lounge flare never sounding cheesie (like so many other versions do). Once again this band was recorded by Enoch Light so the sound quality is unbelievable.

Beacon Street Union
The Clown Died in Marvin Gardens
1968 See For Miles Records
U.S.A. (35 Mins)
I love the two BSU albums...and find each of them offers some different twists and turns which is key considering they were both released the same year ! The BSU were part of what became labeled the "Boss Town Sound" along with bands like Ultimate Spinach and Orpheus. The Clown Died in Marvin Gardens did not fair as well as did their debut album and is often put down as a bad album which is so sad as the album is anything but that ! This album is a psych concept album which features a 19 min killer track "Baby Please Don't Go", a number of interconnected songs and even a Carl Perkins cover of "A Not Very August Afternoon".

SRC
1968 One Way
U.S.A (30 Mins)
SRC's debut album is a classic on vintage USA Psych and an absolutely essential album of this genre. Imagine the dualing guitars of Gary Quackenbush and Steve Lyman fused with the psychedelic Hammond work of brother Glenn Quackenbush put to the prototypical 60's psych vocal styled Scott Richardson. In many ways this album has a similar vibe to it as the stunning TROLLS album. The track "Exile" lifted from this album is one of my fav's from this whole genre of psychedelia ! a pure mix of King Crimson The Who and Trolls all in one great album.

SRC - Milestones
1969 One Way
U.S.A (40 Mins)
SRC were part of the long and rich Michigan prog/psych music scene and released 2 stonker albums. Milestones was their second release and simply continues their exploration into the sacred land of the Psych-prog with a slighly more daring quality. Back on the last 60's and early 70's bands were stretching out and began to look to incorporate classicl music (aka ELP) into prog rock. Even SRC got into the act with their adaptation of the works of Edvard Grieg performing "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and "The Angel song" which make this a definite trip.

Captain Beefheart
& His Magic Band
Safe As Milk
1967 Buddah Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
Safe As Milk was i guess officially Captain Beefheart's first album and presents a sneak preview in a pure genius at work. For those who don't know the music of Captain Beefheart (aka Don Vliet) i can assure you that you will groove to this guy! Although 1969's progressive "Trout Mask Replica" is the most widely recognized work by the captain, this little album of bluesy-psych is a diamond in the rough! This album includes contribution from a very young Ry Cooder who was part of the band at the time !

The Velvet Underground
& NICO
1967 Verve Records
U.S.A. (40 Mins)
The Velvet's debut album "Andy Warhol" is one of those albums that you just gotta dig! I remember hearing this album in high School and thinking how bad the music was, but then in University I picked the album up and gave it another whirl and had a very different angle on the album. The truth was I was in a record store and the guy was spinning "There She Goes Again" and I asked who this was at the time. Of course this album nor the band likely need any introduction but in case there are a few who have not yet tried to peel off the banana let me offer a review. The Velvets are Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker and a German Femme Fatale named NICO. This album although on the surface feels rather "stark" and "slightly stoned" relly is "stark" and "Slighly stoned" ! This album offers a little bit of everything.....R&B, Psych, Prog and punk. I am not a huge Lou Reed fan but his role and fit on this album is darn near perfect. Without question "All Tomorrow's Parties" is one of my favourite rock songs of all time. An excellent album .
